development of cultural tourism. An American tour operator has already taken
notice and will soon start offering vacations that include a two-night stay at an archeological site where tourists can participate in the excavation.

Saying it with flowers: Tunisian fragrances sought after by the world's greatest perfumers

January 14th 2008

Tunis, December 31, 2007 (TunisiaOnline) --From time immemorial, or more precisely from the time when Carthage ruled the Mediterranean waves, Tunisia has always been one of the world's greatest exporters of flower extracts such as that of the ‘Neroli' or orange flower, the rose, the jasmine, the fell, the lavender, the geranium, the thyme the wild rose, and the rosemary to name but some of the major fragrances the country is famous for.
The Tunisian Neroli in particular is very much sought after by the world's greatest perfumers who sometimes resort to more than 50 fragrances for the creation of one perfume only.
Historians, often refer to the Carthaginians as great experts in the field of producing perfumes from the different fragrances that had no secret for them; and indeed there are tangible vestiges of glass and porcelain perfume recipients that have been found throughout all Carthaginian sites in Tunisia , and around the Mediterranean

One of the key issues is linguistic diversity in cyberspace linking the potential offered by modern communications tools.

New book pays tribute to the resilience of the myth of Carthage

A recent book by Ridha Tlili, a Tunisian historian, provides ample evidence that in spite of its final destruction by Rome in 161 BC, the myth of Carthage remains very much alive, as over a period of 3000 years since its inception, the ancient city has spawned more than 70 cities bearing the same namesake throughout the world.

Fittingly entitled ‘Les Carthage du Monde' (The Carthages of the world), the 125 page book published by Apollonia Editions, is an illustration of the many Carthages which have emerged throughout the four continents, all inspired by the greatness of the original Quart Hadasht, or city of hope, which was originally created by Queen Dido.

From the Carthage in the US , to that of Carthagena in Chile and in Spain , the book provides photographs and stories of the more than 70 cities that were inspired by the ancient foe of Rome .

It also provides interesting information on the relationships between all these cities . The author is currently the vice –president of the Euromed Forum of Cultures, and a contributor with the El Legado Andalusi Foundation. He is also citizen of honor of Cartagena de Indias , and Chile , as well as of the city of Seville in Spain .

The Jews of Tunisia

A brief historical background about Tunisia’s Jewry. A tradition among the descendants of the first Jewish settlers were that their ancestors settled in that part of North Africa long before the destruction of the First Temple in the 6th century before the common era. After the dissolution of the Jewish state, a great number of Jews were sent by Titus to Mauritani a, and many of them settled in Tunis. These settlers were engaged in agriculture, cattle-raising, and trade. They were divided into clans, or tribes, governed by their respective heads, and had to pay the Romans a capitation tax of two shekels.

New York City's public school teaching Arabic

17 September 2007

One of New York City's smallest public schools is probably one of the most controversial – the Khalil Gibran International Academy. The Brooklyn middle school, devoted to Arabic language and culture, opened its doors for the first time this week as the city's new academic year got underway. Paige Kollock reports. "A public school that's going to teach Arabic, which is good for our kids." "While most Muslims are not terrorists, virtually all terrorists are Muslim, says Wiesinfeld. “Yes, the world is different since 9/11. The Saudis have funded terror. Other Arabic groups have funded terror, and we have to look at those schools a little bit differently than we look at the Chinese and the Greek and the French [schools]." Rabbi Ellen Lippman is an Arabic school supporter But the school has many supporters, including Rabbi Ellen Lippman. "Many of us feel that there is room in this city for this new public school and that it will grow and thrive and perhaps build bridges between people, instead of having so much divisiveness."

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Guests,
As Tunisia celebrates today the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic, it gives me great pleasure to attend, on behalf of Ambassador Nejib Hachana, the inauguration of this new Tunisian Cultural Center of New York.

This center, I am convinced, is a tremendous achievement for our country. So hopefully, thanks to our concentrated efforts and our determination, we will make of it a great success story.

Thank you for your attention and good luck to Mrs. Remadi.
Mourad Belhassen, DCM

Director Remadi's Speech

Dear ladies and gentlemen, members of the Tunisian and American communities,

As our President Ben Ali stated on the National Culture Day in 1989, "The change is an endless cultural project because it is fostering the spirit of the contribution to the enrichment of knowledge, being never satisfied of both the present time and the future."

We are so happy and thankful that you have all come to celebrate the Grand Opening wih us this evening. This has been a project I have worked on for years and am so happy to finally see its fruition. I would also like to thank Mr and Mrs Ben Ali, the President and First Lady of Tunisia, who have supported me in every way and without their generosity and guidance, we would not be here today.

From H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Nejib Hachana
